Breakfast with my baby!

This one is short and sweet! One thing that I love is having a one-on-one breakfast with my one-year-old baby boy. It has turned into our Saturday morning ritual. My nine year old would rather play his video games and watch Sponge Bob Square Pants and it is a time for my wife to get some extra sleep.

So, I gather our things and we are off to a local breakfast spot that has become “our” place. It is a sweet time of bonding for the both of us. Our Saturday special is the egg white scramble with potatoes and bacon. The funny thing is that there is more “scramble” on the floor than what makes it into my baby’s mouth. The workers always seem to extend a dad and his baby more grace than the norm. I think that there is a funny sense that a mess is to be expected.

It is a morning that is always filled with sweet surprises. I really get to see my baby’s personality forming and he is learning to know me. You know, he really knows me and I love that.

I would love to hear of some of your special moments that you do or have done with your kids to build that sense of relationship and bonding. Its great to always hear new ways to connect with our kids.

    Gabe,
I am going through your website and reading the blogs, and this one caught my attention. Partly because I know which place you are talking about, and it has, or is becoming for our family, a little breakfast ritual on the weekend as well. We go down there, sit our son in his high chair and watch the “tchoo-tchoo” train pass by while waiting for the food. I love to see the look of expectation on my son’s face, when he hears the warning for the train. I love watching his face lighten up when we bring him his muffin, and his little voice saying “yeeeeeaaaaaah!”.

The other day, after we came back from our walk, I tried to feed him lunch but he wasn’t very interested. So I made my own lunch, a big salad with lots of stuff in it, and sat at the table to eat. A few seconds later, my 21 month-old, who was playing around, came to the table, dragged a chair towards me, climbed on it and started examining my salad. He started pointing at things, saying “what’s that?” (his favorite line), and then proceeded to steal and eat all my cherry tomatoes, while exclaiming “mmmmhhh!”, for “yummi”. He was so cute. So we ended up having lunch together, out of the same plate, having a conversation about how yummi the salad was. It was one of those special bonding moments.

I agree with you, we have to watch our kids. They will tell us who they are. And then we have to nurture that, every day, all the time, and intentionally.
